A volunteer led local museum in North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland

Who We are

We are a friendly group of volunteers at the Coastal Communities Museum. When we reopened in 2013 our remit was to cover the whole North Berwick coastal ward in East Lothian. This area covers the historic villages of Dirleton, Gullane, Aberlady and Whitekirk plus the smaller inland hamlets in addition to the coastal town of North Berwick.

WHO WE ARE

The Coastal Communities Museum is a registered charity SCO43666 which relies on grants and donations to survive, and a volunteer workforce to conceptualise, research, arrange, erect, promote, administer and man exhibitions. Although the doors of the Coastal Communities Museum were opened for the first time in June 2013, North Berwick had a proud museum heritage. The old museum was closed in 2002 by East Lothian Council. A working party was set up to re-establish a museum, one which would meet the needs of the 21st Century and be sustainable over the long term. The outcome was to be a partnership between East Lothian Council and a Board of Trustees representing the museum.

Originally the museum in North Berwick only exhibited artefacts from within the town and immediate surroundings, but its remit was broadened for reopening in 2013 to cover the whole North Berwick coastal ward. This area also covers the historic villages of Dirleton, Gullane, Aberlady and Whitekirk plus the smaller inland hamlets.
